Foulées since the Belle Epoque by the celebrities of the whole world, the boards of Deauville are always in the spotlight. Back on this mythical walk ...

Deauville and the boards of its famous promenade once again hosted the American Film Festival in September. The opportunity for famous American actors to write their name on the walk. But who are the stars? The boards or the actors? The boards, of course ...

First steps of star for Deauville from 1863

The planks of Deauville are for ancestors these famous wooden booms that were installed punctually on the sand to reach the edge of the water without risking dirty crinoline dresses. The first terrace along the sea was built in 1863 instead of the current boulevard Eugène-Cornuché, just in front of the facades of the Hotel Normandy and the casino. In the meantime, the construction of the jetties profoundly changed the shoreline and encouraged Deauville to review the project 200 meters further in 1923. It was the first time on the Côte Fleurie that a 656-meter wooden dam was laid out. . The beginning of glory !

Planks are made of azobé wood

To withstand the repeated attacks of the sea and the wind, the planks are made of azobé wood, an exotic, rot-proof essence known for its hardness. Very quickly, the problem of its fixation makes the construction costly. The joists on which the wooden slats are laid down and the sand pushed by the waves lifts the planks. The construction of a dike of 2.50 m height will not change anything to this natural phenomenon. It was only in the 1980s that a forest of wood ears planted in the sand managed to cut the waves and protect the walk.

A lifetime between 20 and 25 years

The boards have a life span of between 20 and 25 years. A restoration campaign has just ended and the last 80 linear meters required 350 kilos of nails! Suffice to say a performance, because it is not easy to plant nails in this African wood also called "ironwood". So, no chance to bring back a piece of board as a souvenir ...

An artist's vision

Charles Adda is the architect who won the competition launched by Deauville in 1923. In a few years, he managed to impose a modern Pompeian-style concrete seaside resort, nine inner courtyards punctuated with covered walkways and hundreds cabins, while keeping the Norman spirit with this long wooden walk. The shops flourish and the bars of "the sea" and "of the sun" quickly become fashionable places during the summer period.

Funny place for a meeting ...

In the Roaring Twenties, the boards become so famous that the newspapers tell the smallest gossip. André Citroën walks his children in small "Ci-troënettes", scale models of his recent cars, Sem croque celebrities, Coco Chanel just launched his new collection, as for artists and starlets, nothing is too good to provoke the 'admiration. It is even said to have crossed a famous painter dressed in a swimsuit cut in a card game! On the boards aristocrats cross, wealthy bourgeois, artists of all kinds. "A wonderful mess-rummaged," as Tristan Bernard describes it.

From Gabin to Marceau

Eighty-five years of existence and several films to their credit. Good performance ! From the 1950s, the boards seduce the greatest directors, from Max Ophuls to Sacha Guitry. We meet Maurice Chevalier, Jean Gabin, Danielle Darrieux in the early morning while Claude Lelouch is about to shoot A man and a woman. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1966 and two Oscars in the United States. The boards go around the world, it's the consecration. In 1975, the creation of the American Film Festival confirms this success and the boards are on the front of the stage each year in September.
