Interview of designer Patrick Jouin, one of the leaders of his generation. By L'Express Styles ...
If you were anyone else, what would it be?
Patrick Jouin: A painter, in the wake of Gerhard Richter. Painting is my other passion. Unfortunately, I rarely do it. I deplore the fact that to progress, it takes a lot of work. What interests me is the search for a new pictorial emotion, not the simple representation. I sometimes dream of another life where I would devote myself.
How do you protect yourself from annoyances?
Patrick Jouin: Smiling ! This may be disarming for my interlocutor, but I am unable to get angry. I learned very early to control my emotions not to annoy my friends. At the agency, I consider that my team tries to do its best and, therefore, if one of my collaborators makes a mistake, I do not hold it to him rigor. Trust generates indulgence ...
Which record do you recommend for a tête-à-tête?
Patrick Jouin: Whether in love or not, an appointment is necessarily without music. I can not both listen to my interlocutor and a disc. I do not have this gift of ubiquity. To me, music is too important to listen to with one ear. But I can not work without!
Club-sandwich at Bristol or McDo on the Champs?
Patrick Jouin: Neither. I hate the Champs-Elysees and I would rather Plaza Athenee, where I signed the decoration of Alain Ducasse's restaurant. I prefer, by far, a good sandwich baguette with lemonade, at a popular cafe. I do not like fast foods or ultrasophistication.
What makes you flee to a person?
Patrick Jouin: I hate people imbued with themselves and smugglers. Those who occupy all the space do not accept me. If I have the misfortune to cross, I enter my shell or I turn instantly on the heels.
A so-called masterpiece that irritates you?
Patrick Jouin: The pyramid of the Louvre, made by the Sino-American architect Pei. It is a shortcut of the pyramids that I find totally missed. On the other hand, the undulating canopy of Mario Bellini and Rudy Rucciotti which covers the new department of Islamic arts is very successful. A work in perfect harmony with the Louvre.
The defect you claim?
Patrick Jouin: I am very messy. I like everything to be tidy, and yet I am the worst enemy of the order. I can not help but stagger my things, at the risk of losing my sketchbooks. I am very dispersed but I can not concentrate otherwise. The diversity of projects stimulates my creativity.
After the Chaumont Garden Festival, do you want to invest in the public space?
Patrick Jouin: Yes. I realized on this occasion that with a little creativity, the will and some tree trunks could change the face of a village square and almost dress the face of a suburb. It's also the role of a designer.
International Garden Festival: From April 24 to October 20, 2013 in Chaumont-sur-Loire.
