These building materials are now very popular with architects. Used in interior design, they are left rough for economic / aesthetic reasons, simply protected by a varnish in aqueous phase.

The advantages of wood-based panels

Derived from the wood industry's waste recycling sectors, they combine the reduced cost and advantages of wood: sustainable resources, lightness, stability and mechanical resistance. Products industrially, they have a regular quality and are available in different lengths, widths and thicknesses. For each type of panel, there are factory fire-resistant (fire resistance) and water-repellent (water resistance) treatments, which can be used in damp rooms, including bathrooms. They are found in GSB.

Their weak point

Made with glue, they emit VOCs and / or formaldehyde. But the new generation panels (especially MDF) are much less emissive than before, or even more at all.

Invented in the United States, the oriented particleboard - known Triply brand - consists of thin and long strips of resinous wood glued and pressed. Its thickness varies from 6 to 22 mm. It can be stained, especially if it is used in flooring. Cost: less than 10 euros per m².

Also called multipli or Batipin (the name of a brand), it consists of thin sheets of wood unrolled and assembled with crossed folds (which is clearly visible on the edge of the panel). Used in the furniture industry, it is also used for palisades and formwork. Architects appreciate his marked veining. Cost: from 35 to 50 euros per m² depending on the thickness.

Composed of wood fibers and synthetic resins assembled under pressure, the fiber board (also called Medium, named after a brand) works like solid wood. It can be stained, waxed or lacquered and is available in a tinted version ("Topan Color", 7 colors, Isoroy). Cost: 25 euros per sqm in thickness 22 mm.

The agglomerate

Also known as particle board, this solid and economical material is made of sawdust and fine wood chips, the whole being bonded by glue and hot pressed. Only thick and hard panels are suitable for use on the ground. Cost: about 12 euros per m².
