What is the weevil?

The weevil is a beetle. These insects are present everywhere on the planet and tackle a lot of plants. They are often introduced by mistake or accident when importing certain species of plants. The palm weevil or agave for example come from South America.

Most weevil larvae are creamy white and live in the soil. Adult, white larvae turn into insects usually black with two large antennas and can not fly. The weevil's reproductive cycle is about 60 days old and the larvae have five stages of development before they transform. One can thus fear the presence of 5 generations of larvae under the soil devouring roots.

Female weevils reproduce by parthenogenesis and can lay up to 600 eggs per night. Larvae feed on plant roots during a year before transforming itself by emerging little by little towards the aerial part of the plants.

The larva digs galleries in plant roots and weakens them. It can cut the root of a young plant without noticing it because one can detect its presence only by lifting the plant and exposing the roots. When the weevil becomes an adult, devours the aerial parts of the plant by gnawing and devouring the leaves. Injuries can be identified by observing notches around the leaves. The damage is unattractive but less serious than those caused under the surface of the ground.

Nematodes are bought in garden centers and you have to use them as quickly as possible or leave them cool for a few days, if you can not use them right away.
